We Do What Is Easiest Not What Is Best

Have you ever told yourself you weren’t going to overeat this time or that you were going to order the side salad instead of the french fries, but next thing you know your plate is full and there are golden fries sitting in front of you?
Why does this keep happening?
This verse sums up most people’s struggles with self.

“I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.” Romans 7:15

In Daniel Kahneman’s book “Thinking, Fast and Slow” he puts it as the Elephant and the Rider.

The Rider is slow, thinking, and methodical
The Elephant is fast, reactionary, and emotional

The Rider is no match to overpower the elephant. The verse above sums up our battle between our conscious brain and our subconscious brain, our rational side vs our emotional side.

How do we overcome the Elephant?

By putting ourselves in an environment to succeed
By having people or things that keep us accountable
By having a supportive network
By slowly turning away from old habits and creating new ones that support our goals.
