Think-Plan-Act-Learn

These four simple words could change your life. They could be the backbone of any decision you make or the building of a great company or the start of a better healthier life.

I was at a conference this past week and one of the speakers talked about the cycle of Think-Plan-Act-Learn. And it struck me how sad it is that most will never make it to the learning phase because most will never act, hell most will never plan.

The four-step process is extremely important.

Think

Thinking is the fun stuff there are no commitments not even a hint of possible failures. The thoughts and ideas and possibilities are endless. This is the I want to lose 10lbs stagged so my knees don’t hurt as much. This is where everyone starts.

Plan

The planning stage is where you feel like you actually have to start working. This is where you figure out how you are going to make it happen. I will go to the gym 2 days a week. I will have protein and vegetables at each of my 3 meals. This is also where you plan for foreseeable setbacks and obstacles.

Fun Fact: I spent my second college semester planning out and researching hiking the Appalachian Trail it was a lot of fun. I never actually took action on any of it.

Most will stop at planning and that is it.

Act

This is taking that first step off your cliff of comfort and plunging feet first into the waters of uncertainty below.

This would be signing up for a gym membership and using it or trying your plan of eating more vegetables and protein.

The reason people don’t act is that we never get out of our own heads. We talk ourselves out of any action with irrational self-talk. This robs us of the joy of adventurer and most importantly learning.

Learn

With new experiences comes new ideas and perspectives. The best plans never go as planned. That is why we learn. We take our new found information and we think how can we do it better. What went well, what do I need to tweak?

We set up a new plan and we act again and more importantly, we learn and get better.

Feed the cycle.
