Diets that promise quick fat loss and easy results are like adding gas to a wet fire. I big flame followed by a whole lot of nothing.

This past week I was trying to start a fire with brush that had been sitting in the rain. I could not get it to light; I did what any person would do in this situation- grab dry wood and some gas to get the whole thing going. It worked great for all of, oh, 1 minute before I saw the last flicker of flame poof out along with my hopes of starting this fire.

Instead of giving up I decided I would do it the right way and start with dry wood and slowly add the wet wood.

It worked great, and if I had done that from the start, I would have saved myself a few hours.

What does building a fire have to do with fat loss?

Diets and cleanses are like gas. They work well for a short period and when they are over you have very little to show for it other than a quick flash in the pan, in this case, a few pounds lost on the scale.

More often than not you feel more frustrated then when you started.

How to build a long-lasting fat loss fire?

Four lasting principles:

  1. Be mindful of what you are eating
  2. Eat appropriate portions
  3. Eat more food you prepare
  4. Build a good relationship with food (don’t use words like good and bad)

Is dieting or doing short sprints ok?

In short, yes.

BUT

Not until you have the four principles under your belt.

Adding a quick fix to your life without having the principles is like adding gas to wet wood, a whole lot of flame with nothing to show for it in the end. But you add that gas to an already strong fire, and you get a jump start and are still left with a strong fire after the sprint.

In short, get your base right first, and then you can start playing around with more flashy things.
