Hope In A Crappy Situation

I can’t say I would ever trade in the scenic beaches and lush green forests of Maine for the buzz, youth, and culture of a New York City. After two days the novelty of having coffee shops on every corner wore off, as I became too accustomed to only seeing different shades of gray; gray buildings, gray sidewalks, gray cars, etc.

On the last morning of my weekend to New York. I woke up early to get some reading in for the day, but after that, I decided to wander outside in the early morning, 8 o’clock which is early as it pertains to New York time, to get a feel for the city and selfishly get some caffeine into my system.

As I walked a few blocks with coffee in hand, I passed people getting ready for a wine tour that was starting at 9, a coupled buying bagels and coffee, a beggar begging, and joggers well jogging*.

Continuing my walk, I saw a young lady walking her dog, which was hopping along, when I looked down at the dog I noticed that it only had one front leg, as I looked up and saw the dogs face. A ball of emotion rose up in my throat.

There was something about the joy that was on the dogs face. With a crappy situation of only having three legs, possibly not being able to run, was still exuding joy to be out walking with its owner.

Life is full of crappy situations, and we don’t always have a say in what happens to us, but like that dog, we can decide if we are going to walk around downtrodden and sulking or with eyes gleaming and a smile that brings joy and hope to others.

*Jogging in the city is way different than jogging on the side roads of Maine. City jogging is more like interval training than endurance training, for you have to stop at every red light every block unless you get lucky and get to string a few green lights together.
