All Twerk No Play: 4 Health Tips from Miley Cyrus

Well, this past week was an interesting one indeed. If you have been away from the TV or radio or any human contact then you may not have heard, but if you have been then you have most likely heard about or even seen the display put on by little Miss Cyrus. I would normally put a link to the video, but I do not want that level of smut on my classy blog.

Even by talking about Miley has actually led to my blog being considered slightly less classy then it was just hours before posting this blog. But it is too rich of a topic, and so I have to talk about it.

If you did not see it, type Miley Cyrus into any search engine and I am sure you will find it. I am about to describe what took place so that if you have any small children reading in the vicinity you should ask them to leave.  If you have a weak stomach then you may want to skip this next paragraph.

Miss Cyrus was performing her hit song “We Can’t Stop at the VMA’s.” The song is about her love for Molly (Not a girl). She wore an awful skin colored onesy of sorts. She was on stage with giant stuffed animal bears just dancing (would have been way cooler if they were real bears that then mauled her but oh well). She was twerking it and wagging her tongue (no, it was not sexy; it was anti sexy if anything). If the onesy wasn’t bad enough, she made it way worse by taking it off and dry humping some guy on stage. I think that about sums it up. It was an attack to all your senses, like when you get a whiff of fresh dog shit and it just lingers there for a while.

As a strength coach and a self proclaimed fitness nut I did pick up on some health information I think Miley was trying to tell us. I think there were four of them but there could be more, I just don’t want to watch the video again to find out.

Get Out and Get Some Sun

If you are from the New England area or have four seasons, then you know how much it sucks when it’s cold out and hard to get that sweet sunny D. Exposure to the sun synthesizes vitamin D, which helps strengthen bones. Also, sunlight helps prevent depression, making your mood much happier. sunnyd_0001

You can see that Miss Cyrus does not get much exposure to the sun due to her pasty complexion. This is clearly a statement by Cyrus telling the masses to get out and get some sun.

Drink Water

Most people don’t drink enough water a day. Water helps keep you hydrated and also has no calories in it.  If you are not drinking water because you think it has calories, well now you know it doesn’t, so drink up.

When you are properly hydrated you feel better and feel less tired. If you love Molly like Miley does then you will definitely need to drink lots of water since Molly does lead to dehydration. By singing about Molly she was probably trying to tell us that we need more water in our lives. So really she is singing about her love of water consumption.

Don’t Forget Your Posterior Chain

I have talked at length in the past about the importance of the hip hinge and the posterior chain. You can read about it here. The gist is that you should show your backside some love.

Miley really twerked it hard on stage for all of us, and she even showed us some kind of hip hinge. It was clear to me she was telling all us Americans to not forget about our butts. She wants all of us to do RDL’s and deadlifts so we all have strong glutes.

Working Out Builds Confidence: Don’t Forget Your Dignity at Home

One of the big benefits of exercise is that it makes you feel good and look good. It builds confidence. You will learn to feel good about who you are and be able to go to the beach in your bikini and look in the mirror and say, “Damn I am sexy”. It allows you to go where you want and feel awesome, because you are.

The overall message I got from that VMA’s performance was to be confident in who you are but make sure not to leave your dignity at home. Just because you are fit does not mean you can dress naked in public.

Closing

Wow, I learned so much about health from Miley Cyrus I think we owe her a big thanks for promoting health to all of us. Step aside Dr. Oz and Ms Obama we have a new figurehead for the health movement and her name is Miley Cyrus.

If you picked up any other health tips feel free to share

Best,

Josh Williams
