This past week Darryl Drake, a wide receiver coach for the Pittsburg Steelers, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday.
The response from coaches, players, and organizations sharing their thoughts, prayers, and lasting impacts that Darryl had on their lives was moving.
As I was reading through the tweets and post, one thing stood out to me. No one talked about how Darryl helped them catch passes better or how he helped them master the receiving route tree.
No, Coach Drake had a much deeper impact on the men he worked with each day. He was remembered for the impact he had on their development as human beings, their spiritual growth, and his ability to see something more in someone then what they saw in themselves.
That is the impact a coach can have on a person’s life. Yes, to develop them in sport, but even greater so to develop people to their unseen potential.
I never knew Coach Drake but he has reminded me how impactful a great coach can be and that X’s and O’s are only a small part of the job.
