How Specialized Does A Program Need To Be?

I want to feel special; I want to feel unique in this loud, crazy world; I am not like everyone else, and so how I workout should reflect that.

We are all different people, with distinct thoughts and feelings and ideas. Some of us are short; some are taller. Some of us love reading, some like watching Tik Tok videos (I don’t get Tik Tok, don’t care).

Yes, we are all unique in our own little ways, and no two of us are exactly alike. Where this thinking does not hold up as well is when it comes to training.

The human body is absolutely amazing, and we have all been gifted one. We can walk, run, sit, push, pull, throw – I could go on and on with movements. Unless you have been gifted with a unique movement that no one else can do, your workout programs will consist of the movements you can do.

You may be working out and look over a see someone else doing the same exercises as you, and you think to yourself, “I am 40 years old, and that person is in their 60’s; why am I doing the same exercises as they are?” (Or the thinking could be the other way around).

People doing the same things may not make sense or could come across as lazy coaching, but I can assure you it is not. Again we all are gifted with the same movements. (And if you are thinking about gymnast and how they can do flips and stuff, just stop it, a flip is made up of a series of movements combined together and mixed with skill.) Exercise at its pure base is building strength, capacity, stability, and mobility in our movements.

Now with all this being said, the program should be adapted to the individual. Tomorrow I will talk about the other extreme of programs being cookie-cutter one size fits all.

We are unique individuals, but we share a common ability to move with one another. We need to build strength, capacity, stability, and mobility in everyday life movements to help improve our specific personal or sports-related goals.
